Basilica of Santa María
Basilica of Santa María (Plaza de Santa Maria, Alicante) — the oldest church in the town of Alicante. Built on the site of a mosque. Built in the 13th century in Gothic style. After a fire in the 15th century, it had to be rebuilt. The façade is entirely Baroque. The main front is noteworthy with an image of the Virgin by the sculptor Juan Bautista Borja. Inside of note is the Rococo, high alter and the Bautismo chapels, of the Inmaculada and Comunión. In the Chapter House there is an enormous marble font by Carrara. Free admission. Hours: open only during hours of worship.
