Mount Benacantil (Alicante) – this 166 meter high mountain dominates Alicante’s skyline. The Castillo de Santa Bárbara is perched don top of it. There are three different enclosures from various periods:
Upper-level enclosure (“La Torrera”) is where visitors will find the keep and the most ancient remains of the fortress, which mostly date from the 14th century.
Middle-level enclosure – has various 16th century buildings, including the Salón Felipe II hall, the Cuerpo de Guardia guardhouse, the Patio de Armas parade group, and the Baluarte de la Reina bastion.
Lower-level enclosure – dates back to the 18th century and includes the Revellín del Bon Repós battlement (where exhibitions are sometimes held).
Those interested in visiting this site can get there via a lift within the rockface opposite El Postiguet beach (Calle Juan Bautista La Fora). Fee for using the lift: €2.70 per person.
